Fall 2018 Graduate Student Orientations

Welcome to Mason! As the new academic year begins, George Mason University offers several orientation and welcome programs for new and returning graduate and professional students. Graduate Student Life has compiled orientation schedules from many of Mason’s graduate academic units. They are listed below: please click on the college/school that houses your department; college/school-level events are listed first, followed by departments in alphabetical order. If you have questions about an orientation program, please contact the person or email listed.

If you do not see your department listed, please contact your department directly to inquire if an orientation is planned. A list of graduate programs is available here (select Graduate Studies).

College of Education and Human Development

Division of Special Education and Disability Research
Special Education & Assertive Technology Open House

The Division of Special Education & Disability Research will host an open house following the College of Education & Human Development orientation on August 18 from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Advisors will be available to answer questions and to meet with incoming students in the Special Education & Assertive Technology programs.

Criminology, Law and Society (CLS) New Graduate Student Orientation (MA/PhD students)

Orientation for new graduate students entering the MA/PhD in Criminology, Law and Society programs will be held Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM in Fenwick Library, room 1014B. This mandatory event for new students is an opportunity to learn more about the nuts and bolts of the graduate program, to meet faculty members and other new students, and to receive advice from current graduate students. Criminology, Law and Society – MS in Criminal Justice
 CLS New Graduate Student Orientation (MS students)
Date: 8/23-24/2018

Time: 8:45am-6:00pm (Thursday) and 9:30am-2:00pm (Friday)
Location: Merten Hall, Room 1204 (Fairfax Campus)
This is a mandatory orientation session for incoming graduate students entering the MS in Criminal Justice program. The orientation for will be held in Merten Hall, room 1204 Thursday, August 23, 2018 through Friday, August 24, 2018. Its purposes are to convey valuable information about the MS program, including its goals and requirements, and to help create a sense of community among the fall 2018 cohort members. It will involve organized activities, including opportunities to meet and talk with faculty, students, and criminal justice leaders.

Cultural Studies
Cultural Studies Orientation
Date: 8/23/2018

Time: 10:00am-4:00pm
Location: Fairfax Campus (See email invitation for specific locations details)
From 10-12pm, the CS Faculty orientation will take place. After the CS office and Student Organizing Committee (SOC) invite all incoming and returning CS students to join us for lunch, pizza, and chitchat, from 12-1:30pm. After lunch, the SOC orientation will begin.  We will have an informal social and go over a few things with the incoming cohort, from 1:30- 4pm.  Afterwards, please join us at the O’Georges, in Fairfax, so that the incoming and current cohorts can mingle and socialize more.

HEP Fall 2018 Orientation

Fall 2018 HEP Orientation Wednesday, August 15th 5:30-6:30 – New Student Orientation, Ent 318 6:30-7:00 – Meet & Greet, Ent 316 7:00-8:00 – APA Workshop, Ent 318 The first segment is for all new incoming PhD, Master’s, and Certificate students. The Meet and Greet will be a light dinner and all HEP students are welcome to attend. It is a great opportunity for incoming students to meet current students in the program. The APA workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn about APA if you are new to it, or a great refresher for those who would like one. Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS)
Interdisciplinary Studies New Student Orientation

Please join us for an introduction to the Interdisciplinary Studies program, its director and staff, and your fellow new students! Concentration heads will also be available for breakout sessions. New Graduate Student Orientation Fall 2018

New Student Orientation will provide graduate students an overview of the program, expectations for the first year, and introductions to the faculty and staff.
