Welcome to Mason! As the new academic year begins, George Mason University offers several orientation and welcome programs for new and returning graduate and professional students. Graduate Student Life has compiled orientation schedules from many of Mason’s graduate academic units. They are listed below: please click on the college/school that houses your department; college/school-level events are listed first, followed by departments in alphabetical order. If you have questions about an orientation program, please contact the person or email listed.

If you do not see your department listed, please contact your department directly to inquire if an orientation is planned. A list of graduate programs is available here (select Graduate Studies).

Criminology, Law and Society Graduate Program
Criminology, Law and Society (CLS) New Graduate Student Orientation

This mandatory orientation for new CLS MA and PhD students will provide information about the nuts and bolts of the graduate programs.  Students will also have the opportunity to meet faculty members and other new students, and receive advice from current students.  Refreshments will be served!

Cultural Studies
Cultural Studies Orientation

From 12-1:30pm, Student Organizing Committee will have an informal social and go over a few things with the incoming cohort. We hope that you all will come and join us for some lunch, please do join us for some pizza and chitchat! After the SOC orientation, from 1:30-4pm the faculty program orientation will take place. During this time, you will meet the director of our program, Denise Albanese, as well as the core faculty and receive an overview of the program. Afterwards, please join us at the The Old Firestation #3 Pub & Restaurant, in Fairfax, so that the incoming and current cohorts can mingle and socialize more. HEP’s new student orientation for Fall 2017 is on Wednesday, August 23rd in Ent 318:

  • 5:15-6:45 – Orientation for new students – this is different from the MAIS and PhD orientation, so our doctoral and master’s students should plan to attend both if they are able.
  • 6:45-7:30 – Meet and Greet with light dinner provided.
  • 7:30-8:30 – APA Workshop – This workshop is an excellent opportunity for those of you who are new to or want a refresher on APA Style. Please RSVP to Katie Richards by August 15th.

This event is designed to introduce Interdisciplinary Studies students to the program, its director and staff, and to other new students. We will discuss program policies and procedures, degree requirements, and any questions you might have! Concentration heads will also be in attendance for breakout sessions. Dinner will be provided!
