Welcome from Mason Grad Insider!September 3, 2019
By Sydney Glass and Austin Deray
We would like to welcome all new and continuing graduate and professional students to the 2019-2020 year! The Mason Grad Insider blog is sponsored by Graduate Student Life and will feature great content, with contributions from University Life offices at Arlington and the Science and Technology Campus. This blog was created to give graduate students a voice and be a guide and resource during their graduate career at Mason. Mason grad students can expect to find a wide range of posts focusing on academic, professional, and career development, along with insight on fun and leisure in the Northern VA/D.C. area.
We are excited to introduce the writers and editors of the Mason Grad Insider for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Meet Austin A. Deray:
Austin joined the Mason community as the Graduate Assistant of Graduate Student Life in August of 2016. He has worked in higher education for over ten years: working as a GA and Assistant Director of a Writing Center, as a Professor of Gender Studies, and as an adviser to multiple graduate and undergraduate student organizations. Attending George Mason University as a doctoral student in Cultural Studies, his research interests include the historical creation of heteronormative masculinity, historical and modern social institutionalism of sex norms and ethics, and gender and sexuality in medieval Anglo-Norman, English, and French Literature. His current fields of research are titled “From Men’s Studies to Masculine Theory” and “Film and Media Studies,” both focusing masculine identity formation and historical evolution. Austin currently works as the one of the advisers to Mason’s Graduate and Professional Association (GAPSA) and works with other graduate student organizations at Mason. When free of responsibilities, he is an avid reader, traveler, foodie, and open to discuss any argument uttered in earshot.
Meet Sydney Glass:
Sydney is the Graduate Professional Assistant for Graduate Student Engagement in the Office of Graduate Student Life, based at the Fairfax Campus. Her primary roles include the planning and promotion of events and graduate student outreach. She is from Danville, VA where she attended Averett University and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Biomedical Sciences in May 2018. Currently, she is in the second year of her Master’s of Public Health program, concentrating in Global Health. Her areas of interest include immigrant and refugee health and maternal and child health in which she hopes to continue to gain research and field experience. During her free time, she loves to go to concerts, read books, and binge Netflix.
To start the year off strong, make sure you all join us on Friday, September 6, 3:30-7:00pm for Gradstravaganza, our biggest event of the year. The event will consist of mini-workshops that will provide information and resources to help you succeed academically and professionally. In addition, a picnic will be held after the mini-workshops, which will be a great opportunity to connect with other grad students and simply celebrate the start of the year. There will be games, free food, free t-shirts, and so much more!
Lastly, we hope that y’all are as excited as we are for the events planned for the year. We wish you all an amazing start to the year and hope that you all will join us at our events! Be sure to follow us on all of our social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) and sign up for our newsletter for the latest updates from Graduate Student Life.
