Graduate Student Life Write-In Day

Saturday, November 7, 2020

The Graduate Student Life Write-In Day for Fall 2020 will be in a hybrid format: a limited number of students will be able to participate in-person at a location on campus (masks required and social distancing enforced) while also providing a virtual writing community for others.

Registration Deadlines:
For In-Person Participation: Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 11:59pm
For Online-Only Participation: Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 11:59pm

Free yourself from distractions. Commit to meeting your writing goals.
Take one step closer to being DONE with your paper, thesis, or dissertation.

Sign up for Graduate Student Life’s Write-In Day. This day-long program will give you group accountability and a structure to write with other Mason graduate students who are also serious about getting writing done, while maintaining social distance. Graduate Student Life will facilitate a morning gathering, lunchtime discussion, and end-of-day closing, using Zoom for online participants, and will help graduate students connect in smaller groups in writing rooms and by using Slack. All you need to do is block off the day to minimize distractions, set up your writing space for the day if you are participating virtually, set achievable goals, and commit to working diligently and productively.

The next Graduate Student Life Write-In Day will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2020, 9:00am-5:00pm. If you would like to participate, complete the interest form by the appropriate deadline:

  • In-person participation: Register by Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 11:59pm
  • Online-only participation: Register by Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 11:59pm

Further information, including how to connect virtually, will be provided to those who are confirmed to participate.

If interest exceeds capacity, priority will be given to those working on dissertations, theses, and other projects that help students meet requirements or benchmarks for their degree programs. All George Mason graduate-degree-seeking students at the Fairfax, Arlington, and Science & Technology campuses, other instructional sites, and online programs are eligible to participate.

If you are confirmed to participate, you must make the following commitments:

  • To begin on time at 9:00am and to participate for the duration of the day until 5:00pm
  • To turn off access to Facebook, online games, and other computer/online-based distractions during writing time
  • To minimize distractions by phone by limiting texting and phone calls to scheduled break times
  • To contribute to a supportive writing community among fellow participants

Expectations for In-Person Participation

Due to COVID-19, the number of in-person participants will be limited. To be considered for one of the slots for in-person participation, students must submit their registration form by Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 11:59pm for planning purposes; registrations for in-person participation received after this date and time may not be confirmed. If interest exceeds capacity, we may not be able to accommodate everyone who is interested. Graduate Student Life will confirm in-person participants by Monday, November 2, 2020; please email if you have not received confirmation by this then.

All in-person participants are required to do the following:

  • Be pre-registered and have received a confirmation from Graduate Student Life
  • Show evidence that they have completed the Mason COVID Health✓™ survey and received a “green light” status on the day of the event
  • Wear a mask or face covering throughout the entirety of the event except while eating or drinking
  • Maintain a minimum of six feet of distance from others

Write-In Day will be held on the Fairfax Campus; confirmed in-person participants will receive location information. In-person participants will also be invited to the Slack channels we will use to engage online-only participants.

Graduate Student Life will offer pre-packaged snacks and beverages and a boxed lunch for in-person participants. Please plan to bring your own coffee and preferred snacks. We have limited ability to meet dietary needs; although we will be able to accommodate vegetarian diets, those with vegan or gluten-free diets or additional dietary restrictions should plan to bring their own food.

Expectations for Online-Only Participation

To participate in Write-In Day in the online-only format, please register by Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 11:59pm. Graduate Student Life will confirm online-only participants by Thursday, November 5, 2020; this confirmation will include instructions for accessing the large-group discussions via Zoom and the Slack channels we will be using as virtual writing rooms for Focused Writing Time.

Make plans now for how and where you will set up your writing space; you will want to seek a place with minimum distractions. Make arrangements with any roommates or family members so they know about your plans and can support you in your writing productivity. We regret that Graduate Student Life cannot provide food for our online-only participants; please plan your meals and snacks for the day.

Individual Writing Productivity Consultations

A Learning Specialist from Learning Services will be available for a limited number of brief (15-minute), one-on-one online consultations during this time to offer tips and strategies to increase your writing productivity. Topics can include improving concentration, goal setting, time management, and more. Please indicate on the registration form if you are interested in a consultation; those students will be invited to sign up for a specific time in advance.
